Subway is the largest submarine sandwich chain in the world, with 30,000 restaurants in 87 countries, and more locations in the US and Canada than even McDonald’s. It started in 1965 when 17-year-old Fred DeLuca and his family friend, Peter Buck, opened Pete’s Super Submarines in Bridgeport, Connecticut. With a loan from Buck for only $1,000, DeLuca hoped the tiny sandwich shop would earn enough to put him through college. The shop struggled for the first couple years, but in 1974 the founders changed the company’s name to Subway and began franchising. Subway is now known for its ability to offer a fresh, healthy alternative to fast-food restaurants.
